The construction of historical images in Chinese tradition: the case of two biographies of Wang Qiao (22 janvier)

Most traditional Chinese historians incline to express their ideas by selecting and organizing materials rather than making comments directly. The biography of Wang Qiao in chapter 458 of Songshi tells the story of a filial piety role model while the biography of the same person in chapter 4 of Shengshui Yantanlu tells the story of a reclusive hermit. A detailed textual reading of the two biographies will show how selection and organization of materials help to construct the two different images of Wang Qiao.

The writing for the dead in live world (29 janvier)

Writing tombstones or epitaphs is a duty of known scholar-officials who currently discussed these inscriptions. No one can refuse this job except for a very few. We will examine great historian Sima Guang’s two opposite positions about words for the dead, since he wrote these inscriptions in his early time but refused to do so in his later days. What causes Sima Guang’s turning-down regarding words for the dead? Is there any connection between this turning-down and his historiography?

Demonstrations and government’s response in the capital city of Northern Song China, 960-1127 (5 février)

A thousand years ago, demonstrations already were for the Song subjects means of expressing their dissatisfaction and appeal. Demonstration was a special way between legal and institutional government-subjects communications and illegal anti-government rebellions, and there is nothing new to-day. This talk will examine the sites where the dissatisfied people could reach the government, who were these people and what were the government’s various responses to different opponents in different conditions.

Li Tao’s timing in Xu Zizhi Tongjian Changbian (12 février)

Li Tao’s Xu Zizhi Tongjian Changbian is the most useful and mostly used chronicle of the Northern Song Dynasty. Thanks to its content, historians can even reestablish the day-to-day image of the political life in Kaifeng and the Song Empire. Li Tao has his special way of timing, however. Sometimes, his timing does not coincide with the exact date of an event. This talk will detail interesting examples that show us how Li used his own frame of time.
